Chris Beck

The expansive career of Eckardt C. Beck exemplifies how a passion for environmental protection and stewardship can be successfully integrated into both the public and private sector.

Chris began in the public sector in the 1970’s, beginning his career as Air Pollution Control Officer and founded the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and ultimately Deputy Commissioner. Mr. Beck became USEPA Assistant Administrator, serving under two U.S. Presidents, Ford and Carter, receiving the President's Distinctive Service Award for Chairing the National Toxic Strategy. Mr. Beck initiated the hazardous waste regulations, the basis for the first "Superfund" legislation. As Regional Administrator for EPA Region II, he chaired the Federal Regional Council and the Environment Committee for the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, collaborating with the Ministers of the Environment from 21 countries.

Mr. Beck integrated his passion for environmental protection when he entered the private business sector as co-founder and CEO of one of the largest environmental testing companies, ETC, establishing revolutionary information management systems to help fortune 500 companies understand and minimize environmental risk. Chris founded AWT, the largest engineering/designer of wastewater and water supply systems, and a leader in remediation, conservation and reuse of natural resources, with over 80 operating companies worldwide.

When Chris moved to Syracuse he co-founded Synapse Partners LLC, a wholesale environmental insurance and risk management firm. In the spirit of giving back to community, he founded Synapse Sustainability Trust, a not-for-profit, community based organization, whose mission is to foster public awareness and participation in sustainable environmental initiatives.

For his role as a model of successfully integrating his passion for environmental protection into a lifetime of work in the public, private and not-for-profit sector, the 12th Annual Symposium on Energy in the 21st Century awards Chris Beck the "Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award."
